The purpose of this policy is to establish consistent standards for addressing policy violations, misconduct, and performance deficiencies.
POLICY
Disciplinary action shall be corrective whenever possible and intended to maintain professionalism, accountability, and public trust.
LEVEL I VIOLATIONS
Examples:
- Minor unprofessional conduct.
- Failure to follow minor procedures.
- Insubordination (minor).
- Uniform violations.
- Minor radio violations.
Potential Discipline:
- Verbal Counseling.
- Verbal Warning.
- Written Warning.
LEVEL II VIOLATIONS
Examples:
- Repeated Level I violations.
- Failure to follow Supervisor instructions.
- Unprofessional conduct toward civilians.
- Negligence in duty performance.
- Failure to complete required reports.
Potential Discipline:
- Written Warning.
- Formal Reprimand.
- Temporary Suspension.
- Removal from Specialized Units.
LEVEL III VIOLATIONS
Examples:
- Abuse of authority.
- Serious insubordination.
- Conduct unbecoming.
- Major policy violations.
- Knowingly providing false information.
Potential Discipline:
- Suspension.
- Demotion.
- Removal from Specialized Units.
- Probationary Status.
LEVEL IV VIOLATIONS
Examples:
- Falsification of reports.
- Serious misconduct.
- Corruption.
- Intentional abuse of authority.
- Repeated major violations.
- Actions severely damaging the reputation of the department.
Potential Discipline:
- Immediate Suspension.
- Demotion.
- Termination.
- Permanent Ineligibility for Future Employment.
DISCIPLINARY CONSIDERATIONS
The following factors may be considered when determining discipline:
- Severity of the violation.
- Prior disciplinary history.
- Acceptance of responsibility.
- Impact on department operations.
- Risk to public trust.
- Intentional or accidental nature of the conduct.
COMMAND AUTHORITY
Nothing in this policy prevents Command Staff or the Sheriff from imposing a higher or lower level of discipline when circumstances warrant.
