Chain of Command Policy

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this policy is to establish a clear Chain of Command within the Gold County Sheriff's Office. Adherence to the Chain of Command promotes organizational efficiency, accountability, professionalism, and effective communication throughout the department.

POLICY

Deputies shall utilize the established Chain of Command when addressing concerns, requests, recommendations, complaints, operational matters, or department-related business. Proper use of the Chain of Command ensures that issues are handled at the appropriate level and allows Supervisors and Command Staff to effectively manage department operations.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

Unless otherwise directed, personnel should follow the Chain of Command in the following order:

  1. Sheriff Deputy
  2. Deputy First Class
  3. Corporal
  4. Sergeant
  5. Master Sergeant
  6. Lieutenant
  7. Captain
  8. Commander
  9. Chief Deputy
  10. Assistant Sheriff
  11. Undersheriff
  12. Sheriff

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervisors and Command Staff shall ensure that concerns brought through the Chain of Command are reviewed and addressed in a timely, professional, and impartial manner. Personnel assigned supervisory responsibilities shall maintain open communication with subordinate personnel and forward matters requiring higher review or approval through the appropriate channels.

Personnel are expected to make reasonable efforts to resolve issues at the lowest appropriate level before seeking assistance from higher-ranking personnel.

EXCEPTIONS

The Chain of Command may be bypassed under the following circumstances:

  • Immediate action is required to protect life, property, or public safety.
  • A conflict of interest exists within the Chain of Command.
  • Reporting misconduct, policy violations, or unethical conduct.
  • The matter involves a confidential investigation conducted by the Office of Professional Standards.
  • A Supervisor or member of Command Staff directs otherwise.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CHAIN OF COMMAND

Failure to utilize the Chain of Command without reasonable justification may result in corrective action. Repeated or intentional disregard for the Chain of Command may be considered insubordination and may subject the Deputy to disciplinary action consistent with department policy.

OPEN-DOOR POLICY

Nothing in this policy shall prohibit personnel from communicating directly with Command Staff regarding matters involving misconduct, ethical concerns, discrimination, harassment, or issues that cannot reasonably be addressed through the normal Chain of Command. Such communications should be conducted professionally and in accordance with department policies.
