PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The High Speed Unit (HSU) is a specialized certification within the Gold County Sheriff's Office. HSU-certified Deputies are trained to assist with high-risk vehicle enforcement operations, coordinated pursuit activities, and advanced traffic enforcement assignments. Due to the specialized nature of the certification, membership shall remain limited and selective.


POLICY

Only Deputies who have successfully completed the department's HSU certification process may serve in an HSU capacity. HSU personnel are expected to maintain exceptional driving skills, sound judgment, and a thorough understanding of pursuit policies.


RESPONSIBILITIES

HSU-certified Deputies may:


  • Assist in vehicle pursuit operations.
  • Participate in traffic enforcement details.
  • Assist patrol personnel with high-risk vehicle incidents.
  • Support multi-agency enforcement operations.
  • Provide specialized vehicle operation expertise.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for HSU should:


  • Be in good standing with the department.
  • Maintain satisfactory activity levels.
  • Possess a strong understanding of vehicle operations and pursuit policy.
  • Demonstrate maturity and sound decision-making.

CERTIFICATION STATUS

HSU certification may be suspended or revoked for inactivity, policy violations, unsafe conduct, or at the discretion of Command Staff.
