6.3 Traffic Enforcement

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of traffic enforcement is to promote roadway safety, reduce collisions, and encourage compliance with traffic laws.

POLICY

Motor Deputies shall conduct traffic enforcement fairly, professionally, and without bias.

ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Motor Deputies may:

• Conduct traffic stops.
• Enforce speed regulations.
• Investigate traffic violations.
• Conduct DUI investigations.
• Provide traffic control at incident scenes.

DISCRETION

Deputies may utilize warnings, citations, or arrests when authorized by law and department policy. Enforcement decisions should be based upon the totality of the circumstances and the interests of public safety.
