PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this policy is to establish the responsibilities, duties, and operational guidelines for Deputies assigned to the Gold County Sheriff's Office Motor Unit. The Motor Unit serves as a specialized enforcement and patrol division tasked with enhancing traffic safety, supporting patrol operations, and providing a visible law enforcement presence throughout Gold County.


POLICY

Motor Deputies shall operate department-issued motorcycles in a safe, professional, and lawful manner. Deputies assigned to the Motor Unit are expected to maintain a high level of proficiency in motorcycle operations and serve as representatives of the Gold County Sheriff's Office.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Motor Deputies shall:


  • Conduct proactive traffic enforcement.
  • Patrol high-traffic areas and accident-prone roadways.
  • Assist patrol Deputies during traffic incidents.
  • Support special enforcement operations.
  • Respond to calls for service when appropriate.
  • Serve as ambassadors of the department through professional public interaction.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Deputies assigned to the Motor Unit shall successfully complete any department-approved motorcycle training prior to operating a department motorcycle. Motor Deputies are expected to maintain their operational proficiency through continued training and practical experience.


PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

Motor Deputies shall maintain a professional appearance and ensure their assigned motorcycle remains clean, serviceable, and ready for duty. Deputies assigned to the unit may be held to higher standards regarding appearance, conduct, and performance due to the highly visible nature of the assignment.
