5.5 Vehicle Pursuits

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

This policy establishes procedures governing vehicle pursuits.

POLICY

Vehicle pursuits are inherently dangerous and shall only be initiated when the need for immediate apprehension outweighs the risks posed to the public, Deputies, and suspects.

PURSUIT RESPONSIBILITIES

Deputies shall:

• Continuously evaluate risks.
• Operate emergency equipment during pursuits.
• Follow supervisory direction.
• Terminate pursuits when risks become unreasonable.

SUPERVISORY OVERSIGHT

Supervisors may monitor, restrict, or terminate a pursuit when necessary to protect public safety.

TERMINATION

A pursuit shall be terminated when the danger created by continuing exceeds the need for immediate apprehension.
